An introduction to the topic

Deciding how to act confronts us with reasons that may conflict: keeping a promise, preventing harm or caring for someone. Ethics allows us to examine those reasons and ask what makes a decision justifiable. Some theories give priority to duty, others to consequences, and others to character and virtues, although their concerns overlap. The supplementary reference introduces this last perspective and helps place it within a broader discussion of how to live.
