An introduction to the topic

Living with others involves decisions about rules, power and responsibilities. Political philosophy asks how to justify those decisions and what limits authority should have. One starting point is to distinguish the fact that a rule exists from the reasons that might oblige us to obey it. That distinction raises questions about consent, justice and membership of a community. The proposed reference examines political obligation as a route to further study, without attempting to cover the whole field or replace the video’s exploration.
