An introduction to the topic

Understanding a text from another era requires more than recognising its words. The questions it addresses, the context in which it was written and the expectations we bring to reading it all matter. Hermeneutics studies interpretation and allows us to examine that encounter. Moving from a passage to the whole work, and from the work back to the passage, can change our initial reading. The suggested reference introduces this discussion and its connections with language, history and human experience.
