An introduction to the topic

An idea may seem convincing until it meets an objection. Examining that difficulty, clarifying what we claim and reviewing our reasons are part of the history of dialectic. The term changes meaning from one thinker to another: Socrates examines claims through conversation, while Hegel follows tensions within concepts; these are different contexts. As a starting point, it is helpful to consider what turns a discussion into a reasoned inquiry, and how contradicting an opinion differs from showing its limits.
